The Ailing Economy

In this time of severe economic downturn, I can’t help but wonder how bad it will get. I worry about my family, my friends, myself. I thank god that I don’t own a home, and I fret over the possibility of drowning in my student loans and already modest cost of living.

I understand that freaking out won’t do me much good, but it’s difficult to keep your cool when it feels like the world is hemorrhaging foreclosure notices all around you.

After some thought, though, it occurred to me that as freelancers, we’re potentially more safe than those in full time jobs. In times of crisis, companies are cutting short their regular staff in favor of outsourcing tasks to options that require less overhead (no benefits, so ties that bind!). And while we may worry about keeping our clientele, at least we’re not hiding in our cubicles, praying that the Angel of Death doesn’t appear behind us with a pink slip.

So take heart, my freelancing brethren (and sistren)! We may yet successfully ride out the massive bummerness that is our US economy. I have faith, and you should too.

But in the meantime, frugality is a girl’s best friend.
